As per a November 2020 article (Google’s New Page Experience Signal: An Object-Oriented Approach to UX Ranking Factors, But Will It Have Teeth?) on a popular SEO tool SEMrush, following a 2016 mobile popup algorithm rollout, the author analyzed a list of sites using mobile popups. What was observed is almost no change in the ranking despite sites using excessive mobile popups. Still, we are not saying to use popups in a way that inhibits user experience.
Last November, Google announced that the page experience ranking change (or page experience update) will go live on Google Search this year. As per this April news release, a gradual rollout starting in mid-June this year. Also in the pipeline is a new Page Experience report in Search Console with signals, such as HTTPS security, absence of intrusive interstitials, safe browsing status, and mobile friendliness.
Yes, popups can be annoying if they are placed recklessly. So for popups, one needs to make sure not to have intrusive interstitials while ensuring mobile friendliness. The intention should be to add value to relevant posts/pages/products keeping in mind the visitor’s geographical location, specific times, past tracking behavior, and other such variables.
The challenge is to offer the right kind of offers to the right kind of customers. With OptinMonster popup coupons, one can meet this challenge. Popup is some kind of informational or promotional offer that displays on top of your content, designed to capture users’ attention quickly. You can show coupon popups on specific pages, to specific visitors, at specific times, and in specific locations.
Here is the process to create a coupon popup using OptinMonster on WordPress in five steps:
- Create New Campaign: For this demo, we will be creating a popup coupon similar to this one from Baublebar. You can obviously come out with a different one like an offer with free shipping.
Login to OptinMonster dashboard and click Create Campaign.
Select Campaign Type, which can be any of the following. For this demo, I choose Lightbox Popup.
2. Choose a template or design a template from scratch: Next, choose a template from a list of more than 40 ready-made professional templates. Since this is a demo for coupon popup, I use Coupon theme. You can also design your own template from scratch using OptinMonster’s Canvas technology.
Give a name to the campaign, choose the website where the popup will display, and click the Start Building button.
3. Customize the design: The next step is to customize the design of the popup coupon while being taken into drag & drop campaign builder. There will be preview on the right and editing tools on the left. Make sure to press Save button often.
Click on the headline (Get 25% Off Product X) and change (like TAKE 15% OFF). A similar process for body copy.
To add images, click +Add Blocks, then drag and drop the image to the live preview. We are not adding image for this demo.
How to change the background color of the popup from yellow to white? Possible through Optin Settings » Optin View Styles. There are 2 ways to get there quickly. Either click on the Home icon in the builder or click on the Design tab.
Once there, change the background color to hex code #ffffff. You can do so many other things like add an image, overlay color, or a border.
Click submit button in the live preview to bring up the Editing Fields Element menu on the left. Here you can edit optin fields and button formatting and actions.
Button text can be changed by clicking on the Button tab and typing text in the Button Text field (“Get Started Now”). This is the crucial call to action (CTA) and may need greater focus.
4. Choosing the delivery mode of coupon code: The fourth step is the delivery of the coupon code after they hit the submit button. The recommended way is to deliver it immediately via the Success view and also send it by email. You’ll need to enable your email service provider integration for this to happen automatically.
Alternatively, visitors can be redirected to a new page to redeem the coupon.
The Success View is set up as the default button action. If you want to change your button action to do something else, like send visitors to a different page once they optin, you’ll need to change the button action.
After editing the button text, click on the Action section.
Click the dropdown under Form Success Action. There are quite a few actions available! Choose Redirect to a URL and type your URL in the Redirect URL field.
A coupon link can also be used as the redirect URL, wherein the coupon will be automatically applied once visitors land at the target site.
5. Publishing popup coupon: The final step is to save changes, then publish the campaign. To start the publishing process, click on the Publish tab to see publishing options, then toggle the status button to make it live.
Need to activate OptinMonster WordPress plugin. Next, move to the OptinMonster section of the WordPress dashboard, and click Refresh optins. You should be able to see the name of your new campaign and also be able to see it live.
You can also use the sitewide embed code, which you can grab by clicking on a button. Give this to your web developer to make your OptinMonster integration live, or do it yourself by following this guide.
And you can use the campaign-specific embed code to embed the popup coupon only.
Here’s what the final coupon will look like:
Display Rules to greet new or leaving visitors
The published coupon popup is currently on the default Display settings which is showing the popup after a specific period of time (After X Seconds) once the visitor enters the website. You might want to greet new visitors/customers with an introductory offer or retain those who are exiting the website.
Move to the campaign dashboard and click Display Rules button:

Next, choose is immediate.

Since you only want to show this popup offer to new customers:

So two rules have been place. Visitors will be immediately given the coupon code once they reach the site. Next, only new visitors see this popup.
For those visitor about to leave the website, making use of exit intent technology, move back to Display Rules dashboard, and select from the first field exit detected.

Five types of campaigns with which popup coupons too can be launched
For the above demo, we have chosen Popup (also called Lightbox Popup) under Campaign Type. With Lightbox Popup, usually a small window comes to mind that seeks to collect information such as name and email id. As popup coupon, offering a coupon code.

Popups (or for this article pertaining to popup coupons) can also be Fullscreen, Slide-in, Floating Bar, and Inline.
